Hi everyone,

I'm back. Last month's game day was a bit unusual in that it was the first time I was "hosting" while not even being on the continent. I had a surprise opportunity to spend a month in Greece during April. I want to thank all those who attended in April and especially to Dwayne, Caleb, and Elijah for stepping in and keeping Feature Friday going while I was gone.

For May's feature game (next week already!) it'll be the 2005 classic train game Railroad Tycoon. Rebranded as Railways of the World in 2009 (after the license to the name expired), this game continues to be very popular with expansions still being released.

Players take on the role of the Train Barons in a young United States during the early days of the Age of Steam. Each player begins with a locomotive (the venerable John Bull, the first locomotive to run in North America) and a vision (your Tycoon "mission" card). From there, you will build your budding railroad network into a vast empire. Connect New York to Chicago, earn the most money, develop bigger and faster locomotives as you seek to tap into the vast resources of the North American continent!

!!! If you have a game you'd like to play and draw some attention to, feel free to volunteer for future Feature Game slots. Just drop me a note at feature_friday@hotmail.com.

Feature Friday meets at Southside Pentecostal Assembly (41 Birchwood Rd) from 7pm to midnight.  There is parking and an entrance at the back of the building. A snack table will be set up so feel free to contribute a drink or something to munch on.  And feel free to bring along friends (and to forward this invite).

Hope you'll be there,

Allan

Hi everyone,

It's April and that means spring and the classic rite of spring - MORE hockey. Yes, the NHL play-offs are upon us and the annual dash for temporary immortality and Lord Stanley's Cup is on. So why not join briefly in the spirit of the season and play a game with a hockey theme?

Power Play is a deck-building game in which you to look recruit the best attackers, the best defenders, the best skills, and the best maneuver cards. Each card you add to your team will build upon the strategy you have chosen. Soon your team will act like a well-oiled machine and you'll be ready to take a shot on goal. If you can beat the goalie, you score a point! The player who scores the most points wins. Games typically end with "hockey scores" like 4-3.

Power Play is quick game so once you've won the "cup", be sure to "celebrate" into the off-season by enjoying some R&R and play one of the many other games that will be available.

Hi everyone,

I'm sure that many of you have a game that falls onto the "I've-heard-good-things-about/I-really-need-to-give-that-one-a-try" list. For me, Scythe is one of those games. Ever since it's release in 2016, Scythe has been consistently showing up on people's Top Ten Favourite Games list.

Scythe is a game set in Eastern Europe during an alternate-history, circa 1920s. In Scythe, each player represents a character from one of five unique factions who are attempting to earn their fortune and claim a stake in the land around the mysterious city-state, The Factory. Players conquer territory, enlist new recruits, reap resources, gain villagers, build structures, and activate monstrous mechs in their pursuit of becoming the preeminent faction of the land.

Well there's good news as of today! The SaskGames forums will live on for at least another year (click here for details).

Even so there are some hurdles that will need to be addressed. In order to ensure that you are kept abreast of upcoming Feature Friday game-nights (even if you're unsure when you might attend), I encourage you join my mailing list. Just send me an email at:PS - When emailing my contact list, I use the bcc option so I'm not sharing your email address with others.

Hi everyone,

Many people ask me what is my favourite game. My answer for quite some time has been Brass: Lancashire. Published in 2007, even now few other games can rival it. In 2018 a sequel to it, Brass: Birmingham, was released that turned out to be even better than the original.

So, which one to feature? Well let's start with the original and we'll feature the sequel another time - though I will have my Birmingham copy available to play.

Brass: Lancashire is an economic strategy game in which you take on the role of competing cotton entrepreneurs in Lancashire, England during the industrial revolution. The game begins in a time when canals are the primary means of bulk transportation but ends in an age overtaken by coal consuming trains. Through it all you will seek to make timely investments in developing, building, and establishing your industries and shipping network so that you can capitalize on the new demand for iron, coal and cotton.

Hey everyone,

It's sad to hear the news of SaskGames Forums closing down. This site has been a touchstone of the gaming community for the past dozen years and has been fantastic for getting the word out of what's happening and connecting people. Thank you to the all the people who have contributed in making this site a success.

But this is life and nothing lasts forever - and that's OK (i.e. RIP Strategy Saturday). But with this great site going away, I'm not sure of all the ways I'll look to get the word out about upcoming Feature Fridays. But to start with I will be relying on emails and word-of-mouth. So I have a new email account for the games night:

Email me if you'd like to be kept informed (even if you don't know when you might be able to make it) of the Feature Friday games night and I'll add you to the new contact list I'm compiling.

Also feel free to share this email with any acquaintance that you have that may be interested in coming out.

Hope to see you at gaming,

Allan

Hey everyone,

This Feature Friday, the game in the spotlight will be Trickerion: Legends of Illusion. In this game players take on the roles of rival stage illusionists, each with their own strengths and characteristics. They are striving for fortune and fame in a competition hosted by a legendary magician, looking for a successor worthy of the mighty Trickerion Stone, which is fabled to grant extraordinary abilities to its owner.!!! If you have a game you'd like to play and draw some attention to, feel free to volunteer for future Feature Game slots. Just drop me a note at feature_friday@hotmail.com.

Hi everyone,

This Friday's game spotlight will be on an (but still good) Viking-themed game. What does a Viking game have to do with the Christmas season? Nothing - but it's a good game!  :)

The Feature Game will be Fire and Axe: A Viking Saga. This is one of the better games to capture the theme of the Viking age and its influence on the history of Europe. In the game players seek to gather points through raiding, trading, and settling (sounds very Viking-like, eh?) all the while having the skalds (bards) proclaim their great accomplishments.

  • Fire and Axe

*(this is the cover art of my copy; there has been a newer edition released after this one)
!!! If you have a game in your collection you'd like to play, do contact me to volunteer for future Feature Game slots. Drop me a message and we'll set it up. :thumb-up

The 3rd Friday of November will be here next week and so will be Feature Friday.

As of now, a game has yet to be chosen to be featured.
I'll be posting which  game is selected at the start of next week. If you have a game that you'd like to play, let me know and we can slide it into the spotlight.

Hopefully you'll be able to set the evening of the 18th aside to come out and enjoy a night out.

Hi everyone,

Welcome to Strategy Saturday - 2nd Edition!

Well, that won't be the name of this gaming evening since we will now be meeting on a Friday, but Feature Friday is just that - the return of Strategy Saturday post-COVID.

The new name takes inspiration from Featured Game segment that was a staple of Strategy Saturday. People are encouraged to volunteer to teach a game that they'd like to play. Just let me know which game you're interested in leading and we see if we can't make it happen (you can DM me on this platform).

For the first Featured Game, Cory has already volunteered to teach Terraforming Mars. This is a game set 400 years in our future and imagines you leading a corporation to alter the very nature of the red planet so that humanity will be able to sustain itself on a second terra. It is up to you to guide your corporation's contribution in this most monumental project and prove that your organization will have the most influential innovations for the greatest impact on the future of humanity's new home. Terraforming Mars is one of the most celebrated games released in 2016 was nominated for a number of awards. Click the link and check it out:
