This week I'm bringing out a personal favourite, the dice-worker-placement/area control/sci-fi game Alien Fontiers. Your dice are your space ships, used to mine resources and accomplish different tasks. You primarily use the resources to colonize an alien world. Colonizing different areas gives you different powers that can help you in your mission. There's a variety of ways to get your colonies down and screw over your opponents in the process. Additionally, I'll have both of the main expansions as well as all of the mini expansions thrown in, as well.

It's a medium weight game that's a lot of fun without being too difficult & everyone's welcome to give it a try. It can play up to 6 but anything over 4 is too long so I'll cap it at that. It plays in 90min or so but with teaching and the expansions it'll probably be more like 120min.

I just picked up the recently-reprinted steampunk/role-selection/area control game Mission: Red Planet so I'm bringing it out on Tuesday. Players are Victorian mining companies with their drills aimed at Mars (hence "steampunk"). Using role selection (a la Libertalia or Citadels) you get your astronauts onto rocketships bound for Mars (hopefully with nobody else sabotaging you in the process). The goal is to try and get the most astronauts in various regions to successfully mine the resources of the planet. The new version also adds event cards the moon Phobos.

It's got a few mechanisms at work but it isn't too bad so everyone's welcome to give it a try. It plays up to 6 and I'm fine with trying a full game. I've heard 6-player games take around 90min but since this is a teaching game it'll likely be a little longer.

I'm bringing out the game La Granja on Tuesday. Players try and make the best country estate (which happens to be determined by victory points) over 6 rounds. You play cards to your farm either adding fields (producing crops), extensions (getting your more stables, money or crops), market barrows (that you can fill and take to market) or helpers (that give you powers). The neat thing is that every card has all four options (a la Glory to Rome) and you have to decide how best to use it. There's also some dice drafting each round, area control through the market place and bonus tiles that you can get by delivering goods to local businesses. It has a lot of mechanisms going on and they come together in a really great, fun way.

The game plays up to 4 and I'm fine going with the full amount. It has quite a bit to it and is a little heavy so it might not be for everyone. But if you like medium or medium-heavy weight euros then you'll probably dig this (I'm not big on heavier games and I love it). A game takes around 120 minutes but with teaching it will likely add about 15 minutes on top of that.
