The promo card for June 2012 is Acidic Slime.

I have had some people inquire recently about FNM at ComicReaders in regards to the level of play and number of players that attend. I thought I would post my answers on this here forum in case there are other people wondering the same thing, considering whether or not they should try their hand at FNM.

We typically get 20 - 30 players on a Friday night. That makes for 5 rounds of play. There is a prize pool of boosters that is split among top players. The monthly promotional card is up for grabs, too.

Our group is primarily made up of seasoned players, but newer players should not be discouraged. The game play might be competitive at ComicReaders Downtown-- you'll be playing against some of the province's best, I reckon-- but they are a very supportive, friendly bunch. They like it when new faces sit at the tables.

As an added bonus, you're likely to pick up some new tricks by watching and talking to our players.

This event was devised by the Corporate Domination League, a group of Heroclix enthusiasts that work in downtown Regina. You do not need to be a "member" of this League in order to partake in the event. Business casual attire is not required either.  :)

Here is what has been hitting the table at my home lately...

Space Alert
My six year-old (Breton) and I have bent this one to our own needs. We don't play with the CD. Instead, I set a mental time limit for planning our 13 actions. We also play campaign style, meaning we've named our two human characters and our two android sidekicks. When a section of the ship is destroyed, anyone in that section is lost (killed), and all other crew make it to the escape pods and return to base. We've played four games in this style and only 1 crew member has made it through four missions: Liam (as named by Breton). Playing in this way scratches a growing RPG itch I've developed-- this need to create a character and watch him / her develop. And I find Breton has a keen sense of "story" so this style of play suits his imagination. But, damn, it makes for tense play when you know the lives of your veterens are on the line!

Heroclix
Does this count as a "board game"? Probably not, but its on the table a lot these days. I think we've got 7 or 8 games in since Breton learned the game at Free Comic BooK Day on May 5. We play a modified game-- scaling to our needs. We don't use some of the more complex powers / abilities of the characters, but our basic gameplay has been expanded slowly to include some additional rules. Once Breton had the basics I introduced a few more of the rules. We've had some good scraps! And the superhero-based teams pleases both me and him.

Alien Frontiers
Played this for the first time last night. What a great game-- I'm digging these dice mechanics games. All three players pretty much ignored the alien artifact cards until late in the game so I suspect the next time we play the game will be quite a bit different. I like a good sci-fi themed game (seem to be few and far between to me) and Alien Frontiers fits the bill.

Survive: Escape From Atlantis
We love the squids in our house. Watching those tentacles yank a victim off the beach or out of a crowded boat is a great feeling.

Based on the feedback given here on the forum and at the store, I'm going to keep the Saturday Game Day for 10am.
#1560
The Dark Ascension Game Day we had on Saturday in February had a lower than expected attendance and the feedback from players was that after a late FNM the 10am start time on Saturday Game Day was not very appealing. Players, a question for you: Would you be more likely to attend the Saturday Game Day event if the start time was 12pm instead of 10am?
