I've added the following to the event description: "Please note that if you play a deck that allows you to "combo off" in four turns or less you will be disqualified and will be ineligible for prizes."

Does that address the concern?

QuoteThis new prize structure and achievement point system are excellent solutions to making a casual format competitive and fun at the same time.

Thank you, Blake.

We made the change based on feedback from some of our regular Commander players. The feedback was appreciated, and I agree that the changes should make for a fun event.

I was initially all doom and gloom about the prospects of a Commander tournament especially after I found out that there was no entry fee and the prize was effectively $250 ($175 at your prices). This new prize structure and achievement point system are excellent solutions to making a casual format competitive and fun at the same time.

If you were seeking it, you now have my approval.

I do have a few questions:
1) Do I have to choose my deck before or after seeing the achievements list that will be in effect?
2) Can I earn a single achievement multiple times?
3) How are degenerate combo decks being policed? Jason mentioned something but it was not concrete.

1. Before, please. The achievements are being chosen a few minutes before we open at 12pm. We're not allowing time for deck building.

2. Yes, I don't see why not.

3. I'll let Jason or Lareina respond. I'm not sure what they had in mind. It did not come up in our planning meetings.

Based on feedback from players that have signed up for the event, ComicReaders Downtown is changing the prize format.

Instead of Commander's Arsenal going to the top player of the day, the product will be opened and all players get to choose something from the product.

The description of the event has been updated to reflect this change:
"The prize: Commander's Arsenal will be opened by ComicReaders Downtown staff and all players will get to choose an item from the product. Top player gets first pick, second place player gets second pick, etc. In case of a tie for points, ComicReaders Downtown staff will randomly pick the selection order for those players. Depending on the number players, not all players may get an item from Commander's Arsenal. The product does, however, support approximately 30 players."

Hello, everyone! String Railway plays in less than 1 hour so I will be able to run a second and perhaps even a third game of String Railway after the first. So, if you miss your chance to sign-up for the first game, you will still have a chance at Chewsday Challenge to try this game.

Commander Tournament *Magic: The Gathering*

DESCRIPTION
Commander is a variant within Magic: The Gathering. It can be played in multiplayer or 1-on-1, but the tournament will be a multiplayer tournament. If you are not familiar with the format but wish to take part in the tournament, you can read about the format at http://mtgcommander.net/rules.php.

ComicReaders Downtown is offering as a prize Commander's Arsenal, a very limited product from Wizards of the Coast, makers of Magic: The Gathering. You can learn more about this item at http://sales.starcitygames.com//category.php?cat=5247.

Players will be divided randomly into groups of 4 - 5 players (depending on the number of registrants). Points are awarded to players based on the Achievements they obtain during the course of the game. (The list of Achievements is posted below.) ComicReaders Downtown will randomly pick approximately half the Achievements to be used on the game day. Those Achievements will be picked just prior to the event. Point values for the Achievements will vary. Those point values will not be shared with players until the day of the event.

A ComicReaders Downtown staff member will be on-hand to monitor the games.

Example: Player A plays Storm Herd, Player B casts Terminate then Unsummon, then Player C casts Venser, then Player B casts Withered Wretch, Player B receives 2 points, and Player C receives 1 point.
- Resolve the third spell whose mana cost is the third number in a row, one additional point to the player(s) that continues the chain. Example: Player A plays Mogg Fanatic (CMC 1) then Vexing Shusher (CMC 2) then Player B resolves Volcanic Fallout (CMC 3) Player B would receive 1 point. Another Tuesday has passed and that means it's time to prepare for the next Chewsday Challenge! But before we do that, let's take a look at what went down last night at Boston Pizza North.

Attendance
21! A great turn-out once again. I met some people I had not yet had the honor of meeting, and there were some first-timers, including Debra, David, Nikki, Tyler, and Bryce. It was also great to see Guy at the gaming table again. He came down last night to lend a hand, knowing that Dana, Matt, and Colin were in Dallas for BGGcon. Guy taught Stone Age, and it seemed like everyone enjoyed the game. So, thanks, Guy!

Games Played
- Stone Age
- Backgammon
- Settlers of Catan
- X-Wing: Star Wars Miniatures Game
- Six
- Hemloch
- Elk Fest
- Fzzzt
- Forbidden Island
- Game of Thrones LCG
- Snake Oil

I already gave a shout out to Guy for teaching Stone Age, so this one is for Marc, who taught Settlers of Catan. He started the night with a four-player game, and I noticed that game was followed immediately by another-- this one a three-player. Feedback from the players was positive.

I had committed to running X-Wing. Interest was so high that I stepped back and let the rookies take the reins. It took me 45 minutes to prepare the playing area but it was worth the effort. Folks were drawn to the table like moths to a flame as the starfield map was laid out and as the highly detailed minis were put into position. Even the Boston Pizza server came by for an appreciative look! I ran through the rules and felt like Adrimal Ackbar unveiling the plans for the destruction of the shield generator on Endor. The recruits were standing around the game table at attention, soaking in the details. After that, it was to the ships, to the stars, and May the Force Be With You.

At the onset it was a game of Space Chicken, with Rebels and Imperials coming straight at each other with weapons hot. Just shy of the point of contact, the Rebels drew back on the accelerators and thus both Imperials and Rebels got their first shots. The Imperials next decided to cut left and right (presumably hoping to swoop around behind the Rebels they had hoped would accelerate), but Luke Skywalker ordered his squad to lay off the throttle and thus the sharp-turning Imperials found themselves with their sides and rears in the firing arc of the enemy.

After that close shave, the game was in the hands of the Rebels, but late in the game the tide shifted and it would be the Imperials that walked away the victors.

The Imperials lost 2 of their 5 ships. The Rebels lost 2 of their 3 ships. Luke Skywalker (and R2-D2) were the final Rebels, but with a badly crippled X-Wing and facing the three remaining Imperials, Corey (playing Luke) admitted defeat and thus brought the game to a close.

As a moderator, it was great fun watching these guys get so into the game. Late in the game, strategic planning was intense, with both teams stepping away from the starfield to discuss tactics.

Fantastic! I'd love to bring X-Wing out again!

Odds and Ends
Got to give thanks to the Boston Pizza server that took care of us all night. And to Boston Pizza (once again) for allowing us the use of the space.

Game of Thrones LCG was once again in play. One of these days, I'll have to ask one of the players to show me how that game works.

It pleases me to see Forbidden Island getting so much love. Great little game with the right level of tension.

And two final thanks from me: One to Julian for taking Elk Fest for a spin with me. (Great little dexterity game.) And to Jason, Barry, Tyler, Debra, Guy, Julian, and Meghan for a rousing game of Snake Oil. The best pitch of the night (for me) was when I was The Mayor and Tyler delivered his sound reasoning (with mathematics!) for a Toe Tax.
