Title: Shelving for Games?
Post by: Tempest on May 23, 2023, 02:45:45 PM
I've seen this discussion lots online, but I'm curious what people in the area use for their games. Right now, I have a collection of assorted shelves that I've accumulated over the years. However, they've kinda been scattered all over the place, and I'd like to condense everything down so it's just in one area after I'm doing moving. My collections floating around the 100-ish games (including expansions) number at the moment, so I think two tall-ish shelves should do the trick? I have a decent 6' tall (approx.) shelf, but I noticed the shelves on that warped a fair bit after holding all my D&D books and stuff like that.

Anyways, what do y'all use? Where'd you find yours?

I use Ikea KALLAX shelving.

I've heard that's the popular one! How do you find it for games with slightly longer boxes? I'm thinking of stuff like Lords of Waterdeep, Power Grid, or even classic games like Monopoly/Risk/etc. Do you get some 'overhang'? Just trying to think of stuff like how it looks, and preserving the boxes and all that ;p

I also use Kallax's. It's deeper than it is wide, so long games just go back more. I believe the cubes are 13 tall x 13 wide x 15 deep. I only have a handful games that overhang, and only by an inch or two. I can take some pictures for you, or you can drop by and check them out sometime.

I have a few that overhang. The ones you mentioned will fit nicely.

Ah! Good to know! Thanks for the responses :)

...now I'll have to do some independent research into costs and if they ship to Regina haha.

Thanks again!

I find they pop up on Facebook marketplace often if you want to find em for a good price. If you want them new then you can get IKEA to ship them to you.

I'll keep my eyes open! When I checked Ikea, it looks like they weren't shipping here right now.

It shows available for delivery when I put my postal code in. Might depend on if it's in stock in the warehouse. There isn't an option to check that, you just have to try and see if it'll let you check out with it. They don't send online orders from a store, we figured that out the hard way when we saw stuff in stores but online wouldn't let us order it. The shipping has gone up though. What size/color are you looking for? I can keep an eye out.

I'd have to do a physical count of all my boxes and take some measurements after I move in. My rough estimate is *probably* 4 high by 6 wide, I'm thinking either one of the wood finishes or black.

After I'm done moving I'm also gonna be throwing a bunch of stuff up on ye ol' facebook marketplace, so I'll have to remember to take a look then as well!

...looking at the website they *do* have a 5x5, and that seems like it's the best deal to get those numbers... hmmm

5x5 could work. I have a 4x4 and then a 2x4 on top and it goes almost to my ceiling. I put games that don't fit in the cubes on top. A lot of their shelves are something by 4, so going with a 4x4 might give you more options if you ever want to expand.

I usually fit 4-5 normal sized games per shelf. If they are multiple boxes for the same game I hide some behind the front one. There's usually enough space behind to fit 1-2 boxes. :P

Oh wow, y'all really meant it about the depth. The store pictures don't do it justice! Again, I can't thank y'all enough for all the info!
