Title: New TV Season
Post by: Jason Doan on September 21, 2010, 04:31:02 AM
I know we have some other devoted couch potatoes on this site, so I thought I'd start a topic to discuss some of the new shows this season.  So what are people watching and what do they think?

Boardwalk Empire - Does HBO ever not hit it out of the park?  Scorsese.  Buscemi.  Can not wait for the next episode.

The Event - NBC's attempt at a genre series.  Not a lot of questions as to what the event is or who the detainees are in the first episode, but the first episode did intrigue me enough that I will be checking out at least a few more episodes.

Chase - Another law enforcement procedural from CSI producer Jerry Bruckheimer, this time following members of the U.S. Marshall's service as they chase down dangerous fugitives.  Meh.  Criminal Minds is a much better case of the week show showing the feds hunting down criminals and Justified is a much more interesting look at a marshall.  I doubt this will get picked up for more episodes than the half season they've already shot.

Hawaii Five-0 - I'm not usually a fan of remakes, but this show was actually pretty entertaining in a popcorn action movie sort of way.

Watched

House - Awesome! They don't often return to series the moment the last season ended. THis was a perfect opener.

Castle - Rediculous! But its what you expect with Castle.

Sweet, HBO has already picked up Boardwalk Empire for a 2nd season.

Hawaii Five-0:  Who knows how this will go, enjoyed the premier and LOVE LOVE LOVE Alex O'Loughlin so what can I say?  Having never watched the original I have no need to compare it to that.

House: It was Ok, slightly awkward and uncomfortable but maybe that was the point.  Last year's 2 hour premier from the mental hospital will likely never be beat.

I was kinda looking around for something else new to get interested in but I'm not sure, have read mixed reviews for "Outlaw" and "Blue Blood" so maybe I'll just wait and see what ends up getting all the hype.  It's pretty easy to download missed episodes and catch up later.

Lori if you want a great comedy you got to watch Sheldon in Big Bang Theory, I have been watching this show from the beginning.

Any one else out there liking Big Bang? or am I really the only geek out here?

I await The Walking Dead (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mybBDpYe_5Y#ws) from AMC. It starts Oct 31st...

The wife and I watch Big Bang, Guy.  It's hilarious for the most part, although some episodes hit a little too close to home considering some of the nerds I know :P

Walking Dead looks like it's going to be fantastic, but that's to be expected, AMC always gives us good quality shows and zombies rock.

Watched My Generation on ABC on Thursday night.  It's a fake documentary that cuts between scenes of the characters in high school 10 years ago talking about there hopes and dreams and scenes of what they are doing now.  If they only plan on doing one season I think it could be very good, but if they try and stretch the concept past there it'll get run out of steam quickly.

New season of Eastbound & Down started last night.  Awesome!  Kenny Powers is the man.

New season of Dexter also started last night, wow was it depressing and I have a feeling the whole season will be as well as Dexter learns to handle life without Rita.

Speaking of the awesome Julie Benz, No Ordinary Family starts up tomorrow and the bits I've seen of it look pretty good.  TV needs a superhero show to fill the void left by Heroes, which I think would have been awesome this season.  I hope they end up continuing the story in some medium.

My cable isn't getting hooked up til Friday (seasonal hockey cutoff) so I missed Big Bang and Dexter. I'll have to catch up!

Can't wait for The Walking Dead. And I hear that HBO is showing Game of Thrones in early 2011. Expect greatness with that one.

We watch Big Bang Theory on delay because we didn't catch it in the 1st season so we keep picking up the seasons as they are released.  We've starting recording this season on our DVR so we need to speed through last year's DVDs and get current!  I think it's hilarious!

Dexter is the same.  Some good friends recommended it so we picked up seasons I-IV and are about 1/2 way through season III at the moment.  Luckily our DVR has mega-room to store all this stuff.

Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead are the only two shows on my want to see list. I'm very excited for both.

Is the Walking Dead based on the Stephen Kings book Cell?

Nope. It's based on Robert Kirkman's comic series: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Walking_Dead (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Walking_Dead)

Great reading.

I wonder if Stephen King based his book on the comic then because there are many similarities, at least from the trailer that I saw of this show.

Walking Dead; Episode two was pretty hard to watch. I figured ep 1 was too good to be true. Oh well.

Boardwalk Empire; I watched the first ep, but honestly haven't felt compelled to watch the rest.

Eastbound & Down; Probably my favourite comedy of all time, season two was fantastic.

Bored To Death; Definitely in my top 20 series of all time, love Schwartzman, Danson is an institution and Galifianakis is the next Bill Murray. Absolutely love this show.

Sons of Anarchy; Season three is unbelievable. Some of the best dramatic television I've ever watched. Perlman and Hunnam are just too good together. Pretty stoked to see Chibs go wyld on Jimmy.

Real Time with Bill Maher; Bill Maher is the TV host John Stewart wishes he could be. He doesn't take shit from his guests and isn't afraid to say what he thinks.

This is all I care about. I tried watching Big Bang Theory. I can see why people like it, but man, it's really difficult to watch. I had no idea laugh tracks still existed. I guess as long as there are people that need to be told when to laugh, the world will need the laugh track. Woof.

I didn't realize Big bang had a laugh track, i guess i was laughing too hard.

I hate Bill M and John Stewart.I find bill boring and john not really funny with him laughing at his own jokes too much. They're no Colbert

Taken on it's own, without worrying about how close it is to the source, episode 2 of Walking Dead was fine.  I'd actually be pretty annoyed if the TV show wasn't a little different from the comics...also Michael Rooker = Awesome.

While I'm sure Big Bang fills in some spots with laugh track, it is also filmed in front of a live audience.

Also agree with Fish...Colbert > Stewart.

Bill Mahrer is an anti-medicine, anti religion idiot.

So believing people should take better care of themselves and not pump themselves full of pharmaceuticals makes one delusional?

To be fair, Maher doesn't identify himself as an Atheist, he claims to be an Apatheist meaning he simply doesn't care about religion one way or the other.

This is the place for discussing things that aren't gaming related such as comics, television, movies, music and current events.  You may want to steer clear of topics like religion and politics as those discussions tend to spiral out of control quickly and we would like to keep this site as friendly as possible.  If you do feel the need to discuss those sorts of topics I encourage you to keep the rhetoric to a minimum.  Attacking someone's ideas is fine, attacking someone personally will result in banning.  If this forum ever gets too out of control it can easily be removed entirely.

Third episode of The Walking Dead seemed mighty slow, but it looks like the next episode is going to be insane. Kinda wished I watched this on DVD instead of weekly, but you know, working at a comic shop, this option was not available.

I don't understand why Stephen Colbert has guests, he never lets them speak!  I prefer John Stewart myself but really, US politics right now is entertaining no matter how you look at it.

After episode two I gave up. Keep me updated if it gets back to episode one level of goodness.

ZOMG they aren't doing a scene by scene recreation of the comic?  The horror, the horror.
Title: Re: New TV Season
Post by: JohnKapp on November 19, 2010, 08:23:01 PM
I don't care if it's a recreation of the comic, but I'm not going to look past the horrible writing and even worse acting. The dude that plays Rick is great, but everyone else is just awful. Given the quality of other shows on AMC, I expected far more. Maybe that's my fault, but when I see Darabont's name attached to something I expect a certain level of quality and this was far from it. If you enjoy it that's fine, but I can't get behind this.
