*** ChewsDay Challenge ***
(https://sask.games/gallery/1_11_09_12_10_24_41.gif)

What: The ChewsDay Challenge series of events is part of an initiative to host a public weekly game night that is welcoming to new members and is a way for people new to boardgames to experience a beginner friendly atmosphere. A opportunity for people new to designer board games or veterans of the hobby to come out, meet 'n' greet, and play some games.   This is held at a great location with full food and beverage service. Come on out and try some games.

The venue is also a great place for Wargamers and Strategy Gamers to come out and play a game. There are some titles that are hard to get to the table, let's try to get them the attention they deserve at a ChewsDay Challenge.

Where: North Albert St. Boston Pizza (Regina) (http://sask.games/index.php?topic=2043.0)

When: Every ChewsDay night of course, see date on this post for this particular event.

Who: Anyone interested in playing boardgames. The venue is suitable for many different styles of games: (Wargames, Euro Games, Crokinole, Chess, Go, Scrabble, Backgammon, etc.)

Why: Life is Short; Play Games!

Although not necessary, we urge you to post in this thread if you are coming and what games you might bring or would like to play. Prearranging some games helps get some of the harder titles to the table. Perhaps you have seen someone post about a game in THIS THREAD (http://sask.games/index.php?topic=1799.0), this might be an opportunity to get them to bring out the game and show you.

If you are new to the gaming scene in the City of Regina, come on out and meet some others. Feel free to come a bit early and grab a bite to eat. See you there!!!  :excited

Every ChewsDay Challenge, we will have a Game Host on site to teach a game. This is a great way for new players to experience a game in a beginner friendly environment. The Weekly Game will be set up at 6:15pm and players are urged to be there for 6:30. The feature game will start at 6:45pm. Note: A number of us go early (5ish) to grab a bite to eat, you are welcome to join us.

Without further adieu, here is the Game Host of the week:

There are lots of people bringing games out to play on ChewsDay Challenge Game Nights. To help attendees maximize their gaming experience we can help schedule games into slots for planning purposes. Post in the thread if you want to schedule a game and have folks sign up in advance. There are TWO basic time slots for this. 6:30pm time slot and 8:30pm. This is the start time for these games. They will be set up earlier. If you sign up for a game, please be there at least 15 minutes prior to start or your seat may be given to someone else. This is not mandatory, casual open gaming is still very much encouraged as well. Whether you wish to plan your game night or just show up and play it by ear, game on...

I will be teaching Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures Game in the second time slot (8:30pm). It is a 2-player game, and I will bring enough miniatures to run two tables with 2 players at each table. I can teach the game but don't have to be an active player. That said, if we are short a player at a table I will definitely lock S-foils into attack position...

If you are interested in playing and have your own miniatures feel free to post what ships you're bringing. We can always reserve more tables for X-Wing or even run a team game.

I am bringing 2 X-Wing, 4 Tie Fighters, 1 Y-Wing and 1 Tie Advanced. I also have all the markers and cards from 2 Core Games. And I have two 3 x 3 black felt playing surfaces, and a 4 x 6 starfield map!

Hey, I'll be there next Tuesday, barring any major catastrophes/miracles. I'll be bringing Formula D. If anyone is interested in checking it out, and/or considering the league I'd like to start up (which can be found here: http://sask.games/index.php?topic=2216.0 not much info yet) we can use this as a chance to test out the game and figure out what rules work, etc. I do realize 'league' has extra competitive connotations, but I think my goal is just to have a monthly game with continual scoring over say 4-6 months mostly for the experience of it; I think it adds an interesting narrative to the game. That being said, if people are interested, we could potentially also discuss incentives. Nothing serious, but perhaps something more than the glory of victory? I don't know, just throwing stuff out there at this point.

I'll sign on for Catan, if possible, and also stick around for the second game and play whatever's open. I'll bring Forbidden Island and Smallworld if anyone wants to try those.

mendicantcrow and Mahtan: You are signed up for Settlers.

Marc's game of Settlers of Catan is now full up, folks. But there will be lots more games on the table tomorrow night so you'll have plenty of gaming options.

Another Tuesday has passed and that means it's time to prepare for the next Chewsday Challenge! But before we do that, let's take a look at what went down last night at Boston Pizza North.

Attendance
21! A great turn-out once again. I met some people I had not yet had the honor of meeting, and there were some first-timers, including Debra, David, Nikki, Tyler, and Bryce. It was also great to see Guy at the gaming table again. He came down last night to lend a hand, knowing that Dana, Matt, and Colin were in Dallas for BGGcon. Guy taught Stone Age, and it seemed like everyone enjoyed the game. So, thanks, Guy!

Games Played
- Stone Age
- Backgammon
- Settlers of Catan
- X-Wing: Star Wars Miniatures Game
- Six
- Hemloch
- Elk Fest
- Fzzzt
- Forbidden Island
- Game of Thrones LCG
- Snake Oil

I already gave a shout out to Guy for teaching Stone Age, so this one is for Marc, who taught Settlers of Catan. He started the night with a four-player game, and I noticed that game was followed immediately by another-- this one a three-player. Feedback from the players was positive.

I had committed to running X-Wing. Interest was so high that I stepped back and let the rookies take the reins. It took me 45 minutes to prepare the playing area but it was worth the effort. Folks were drawn to the table like moths to a flame as the starfield map was laid out and as the highly detailed minis were put into position. Even the Boston Pizza server came by for an appreciative look! I ran through the rules and felt like Adrimal Ackbar unveiling the plans for the destruction of the shield generator on Endor. The recruits were standing around the game table at attention, soaking in the details. After that, it was to the ships, to the stars, and May the Force Be With You.

At the onset it was a game of Space Chicken, with Rebels and Imperials coming straight at each other with weapons hot. Just shy of the point of contact, the Rebels drew back on the accelerators and thus both Imperials and Rebels got their first shots. The Imperials next decided to cut left and right (presumably hoping to swoop around behind the Rebels they had hoped would accelerate), but Luke Skywalker ordered his squad to lay off the throttle and thus the sharp-turning Imperials found themselves with their sides and rears in the firing arc of the enemy.

After that close shave, the game was in the hands of the Rebels, but late in the game the tide shifted and it would be the Imperials that walked away the victors.

The Imperials lost 2 of their 5 ships. The Rebels lost 2 of their 3 ships. Luke Skywalker (and R2-D2) were the final Rebels, but with a badly crippled X-Wing and facing the three remaining Imperials, Corey (playing Luke) admitted defeat and thus brought the game to a close.

As a moderator, it was great fun watching these guys get so into the game. Late in the game, strategic planning was intense, with both teams stepping away from the starfield to discuss tactics.

Fantastic! I'd love to bring X-Wing out again!

Odds and Ends
Got to give thanks to the Boston Pizza server that took care of us all night. And to Boston Pizza (once again) for allowing us the use of the space.

Game of Thrones LCG was once again in play. One of these days, I'll have to ask one of the players to show me how that game works.

It pleases me to see Forbidden Island getting so much love. Great little game with the right level of tension.

And two final thanks from me: One to Julian for taking Elk Fest for a spin with me. (Great little dexterity game.) And to Jason, Barry, Tyler, Debra, Guy, Julian, and Meghan for a rousing game of Snake Oil. The best pitch of the night (for me) was when I was The Mayor and Tyler delivered his sound reasoning (with mathematics!) for a Toe Tax.

Yeah, gotta say Snake Oil was pretty fun. There's a good chance I'll be picking that up for the holidays. Kinda reminds me of Apples to Apples, but with an almost RP element... you definitely have to 'get into it'. Also, I really enjoyed Stone Age, which reminded me a fair bit of Lords of Waterdeep, which I played last week. Both of which I'd definitely enjoy playing again.  All in all, another good night, thanks to everyone who made it possible!
