Title: Magic: Invitational Modern Masters Draft: ComicReaders Downtown
Post by: ChadBoudreau on May 29, 2013, 10:18:07 PM
Invitational Modern Masters Draft *Magic: The Gathering*

WHAT IS MODERN MASTERS?
Modern Masters is a 229 card set containing reprints from 8th Edition through Alara Reborn pulled from the Modern format, including the sought after Tarmogoyf! The set is designed to be both high power and balanced for Limited. 20 to 30 cards will have new art, as well as creature tokens that haven't been printed before. A guaranteed premium foil card will take the place of a basic land in each pack.

WHY INVITATIONAL DRAFTS?
Modern Masters is released June 7, 2013 but if you follow Magic: The Gathering then you already know demand is high for this limited edition product. Boxes of Modern Masters are already listed at $300 (USD) on StarCity Games. Brick-and-mortar stores are keeping quantities and prices close to their chests, but one thing is certain: There is not enough product to go around!

For months, ComicReaders Downtown has wrestled with what to do with this sought after product. Well, a couple days ago we came up with a plan....

ComicReaders Downtown will hold Modern Masters Draft events. These events ARE NOT open to the general public. Invites will be extended to members of the MTG community that attend MTG events at ComicReaders Downtown and are known by ComicReaders Downtown as supporters of the MTG community and / or as ambassadors of MTG.

In short, this is our chance to celebrate you, our loyal community of MTG players!

ComicReaders Downtown staff have looked at event data for 2013 and have created the list of invitees. Invitations will be given out starting Friday, May 30, 2013.

FORMAT
Two draft events will be held every Sunday, starting June 9, 2013. Invitees will be able to sign-up to the draft of their choice. (Instructions will be on your invitation. Do not contact us via this forum.)

Each draft will support a pod of 8 players.

Each player will receive 3 packs of Modern Masters to use in the draft.

Players keep the cards they draft.

Cost is $45 (after tax).

Players may be eligible to attend more than one Modern Masters Draft. We will contact those players after the first round of drafts occur.

Pre-registration and pre-payment will be required.

If you pre-register and pre-pay but cannot make the draft, there will be no refund from ComicReaders Downtown. You have the option of contacting another invitee and swapping dates with that player, or you can ask another invitee to buy your spot in the draft.

ComicReaders Downtown has enough Modern Masters to hold 9 weeks of Invitational Modern Masters Draft.

If you just started attending MTG events or used to attend but have not recently attended MTG events at ComicReaders Downtown and wish to take part in the Modern Masters Draft, you might be able to do so if you start attending events (FNM, Sunday draft / sealed) because we will be looking at June data as we prepare invites for the late July / early August Modern Master Drafts.

DATE & TIME
Two drafts will be held on Sundays, starting June 9, 2013. Drafts will run until ComicReaders Downtown runs out of product.

All drafts start at 12pm.

June 9
June 16
June 23
June 30
July 7
July 21
July 28
August 4
August 11

There will be no Invitational Modern Masters Draft on July 14 because of the M14 Pre-Release.

ComicReaders Downtown will continue to runs its regular draft / sealed events on Sundays. See here (http://sask.games/index.php?topic=2747.0) for the June schedule.

PRIZES

Prize structure for Invitational Modern Master Draft will be as follows:

- All players keep what they draft.

- One pack of Modern Masters will be opened and the contents given away based on the results of each draft. The distribution is as follows: Top player picks 2 cards. The seven remaining players pick 1 card in the order of the standings. The selection then starts again with the first player, with that player picking 1 card. That leaves 5 remaining cards, which will be selected by the players in order of their standings. So, to the summarize: Top player (3 cards); 2nd - 5th players (2 cards); 6th - 7th players (1 card).

- Prize pool of Dragon's Maze will be distributed based on player standings.

- Each first place player will be invited back to ComicReaders Downtown at a future date (August - September) for a Invitational Modern Masters Sealed event. 6 packs of Modern Masters. $70 (after tax) entry fee. At that event, no additional Modern Masters or other MTG prize packs will be given.

Is there anyway for retired veterans of the game to get on that invitation list by any chance? Obviously, I can understand giving preference to active players, but I'd love the opportunity to draft the set.

Preference will be given to active players that participate in events at ComicReaders Downtown on a regular basis.

The list of invitees may be extended to some veterans that are not as active as they once were if a number of active players decline the invite. If that is the case, a post will be placed on this forum to say that we are broadening the scope of the invitation list.

So in addition to these "Invite Only" will there be public drafts/sealed events offered to those not invited to play? Using RtR block produt obviusly... I know that the Moder Masters is used for the invit stuff only.

Correct. We are still doing our regular Draft / Sealed Sundays for the general public.

That makes sense. Thanks for the info! :)

Hey Chad,

Thanks for this posting.

The list of events starting in June - are those the dates for the invite?

Will each event be 40.00 entry?

I haven't played much Magic the past few years mostly due to family obligations.  I might be interested in coming out to a normal event again so I can partake.  I believe I have a couple of Goyf's still in my collection of (like many of us) way too many cards.

The dates are when the drafts will be happening. Yes it is $40 for entry.

I made some modifications to the first post to clarify a few points. Also, due to unforeseen circumstances, the invites won't be delivered starting Friday, May 31.

Blargh....Of course, now I have this Sunday free...any chance a second draft will go, or a regular draft maybe?

I think these events were meant to go side-by-side regular events, yes? If so, I should be able to make it down tomorrow/today.

The regular draft / sealed events that we do on Sundays still happen even if Modern Masters is on the go. So come on down for regular draft, Jason.

Based on feedback from our players, I have increased the price of the event from $40 to $45 (after tax) and have added Dragon's Maze packs to the prizes. The Dragon's Maze prize pool will be distributed to players based on their standings.

Anyone that has pre-paid $40 for their event but have not yet played in their event will have to pay the additional $5 either before or on the day of their event.

not a fan of the way you guys handled this- been going to reader's for 20 years and played Magic for 12 of those years and I can't participate because I'm not a current active player. Way to alienate your clients.

Brad, as per an earlier post on this forum, ComicReaders Downtown is inviting back "veterans" for a draft event in July or August. You are, in fact, on that list, as well as some other players that we know used to play here but no longer do so for one reason or another. So keep your eyes on this forum (or feel free to inquire at the store) for future news.

That said, I wish I could hold draft events for everyone in the community that wanted to take part, but Wizards of the Coast, makers of MTG, made this a limited product, which means there is not enough for everyone. That is why I chose to celebrate our current, active players (and veterans) and not make it available for sale for anyone that walked in off the street. This product is so limited I had someone call me from Calgary wanting to buy a box!

Feedback from our players has been very positive thus far. I feel I made the right decision. But I knew that whatever decision I made would not please everyone. That was bound to happen with such a limited and highly sought after product. I hope you continue to be a friend of ComicReaders Downtown, Brad, and I hope I see you at the veterans event.

Cheers

As it stands, I was thinking if you have enough active people who are interested, and there are more veteran players on a list of potential openings than there are spots to draft, I might just bow out. I noticed the set will be available for drafting online as well, so I'll probably just do that. Hopefully that way more people will have the chance to play. I keep trying to make it out to some of the regular events this summer, but I don't think that's gonna happen. No worries either way, really.

I see you enough in-person that I'll give you updates as they develop, but keep an eye on the forum, too, for information.

Thanks for the reply Chad. I know we talked about it in the store but I saw this post on here, emailed the store for clarification and got a response from Lareina that said "only current players are eligible to play in the tournament- see post on sask games forum" so I was confused.

I do apologize for any confusion made, I meant that at the time being current players are eligible, but didn't expand to say that veteran players were going to be invited at a future time.

I've done a few drafts with this set online recently, it's pretty fun. If I may attempt to provoke some casual conversation here, out of those who have participated, what are some of your favourite archetypes so far? I've tried a few different things, like gw aggro, saprolings, affinity, although my most recent success has come from UG suspend.

Edit: I have to note this SOMEWHERE, because it makes me wanna cry... just in the process of doing an online phantom Modern Masters draft, third pack, first pick, foil 'goyf. Oh well, at least it's in my colours!
